An inkjet printer uses ink. These inks are placed on cartridges that contain a small amount of LIQID pigment and are sprayed with a micro nozzle during the print-out process. Some ink cartridges have 3 colors and blend them together to varying degrees, some color cartridges can simply replace the different and spent color. Black text is usually supplied by a black ink cartridge, though some photos are used (or used only) separately or for a second higher quality in the printer when the photo paper is loaded.
Toners are basically dry ink. These are a powdered material that the printer sprays or applies during the printout process so that it is polar opposite a drum, plate or piece of paper directly and then develops to complete the printing process. Toners are usually present on laser printers. The most common laser printers are monochromatic (single color – usually black). Some color lasers use dye-based powders but use the same principle as monochrome printers. These usually contain CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) pigments but in powder form. In most cases, colored lasers are not the best at reproducing colored images. These are generally better for office productivity than photographic outputs.
Most color printers (except using the tank system) are usually able to produce less than 100 pages of text at 10% coverage. A laser printer that uses toner is capable of sending 2000 or more pages to the same coverage. A single ink cartridge can be under $ 20 (cheaper than generic), while a toner cartridge is usually up to $ 100 USD.
So obviously, only laser printers (and copy machines) use toner.
